CCTV and Security: Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we get asked most often about CCTV installation, repairs and security systems in Kent. If yours is not here, call 01622 534 669 and ask.
What CCTV systems do you install?
We install CCTV for homes and commercial premises, including multi-camera systems with local recording and compatible remote viewing. The right setup depends on the property, the image detail you need, lighting, how long you need to keep recordings and how you want to get at footage.
How much does CCTV installation cost?
Cost depends on the number and type of cameras, cable routes, recording equipment, access requirements and the layout of the property. As a rough guide, a small two-camera domestic system typically runs £450–£850, four cameras £700–£1,400, and larger commercial systems from £1,500 upwards. These are guide figures only — we give you a property-specific estimate before any work starts.
Can you repair an existing CCTV system?
Yes, and it is worth asking before you replace anything. We investigate cameras dropping out, poor images, recording faults, damaged cabling and connection issues. Where it is practical we look at whether existing equipment can be repaired or kept before recommending replacement.
Do I have to replace the whole system if one camera fails?
Usually not. A single failed camera does not automatically mean the recorder or cabling is finished. We check what is actually at fault first — sometimes a camera swap or a connection repair is all that is needed.
Do you install CCTV for businesses?
Yes. We work with shops, offices, commercial units, workshops, landlords and other businesses. Systems can be planned around entrances, tills, stock rooms, yards, car parks and other areas that matter to how the premises actually operate.
Can CCTV be viewed on a phone?
Many modern systems support remote viewing through compatible apps, provided the recorder and network are set up correctly. We can explain which options apply to your equipment and configure supported systems during installation.
Do you install alarms and access control too?
Yes. Alongside CCTV we install burglar alarms, access control and wider security systems. These can be considered on their own or as part of one plan for the property — cameras record what happened, alarms and access control help stop it.
How many cameras do I actually need?
Fewer than people often expect. What matters is whether each camera has a clear job — a defined area, a usable angle and enough detail to be worth having. We would rather fit four cameras that give you useful footage than eight that give you wide, vague views.
How long is footage kept?
That depends on recorder capacity, the number of cameras, image quality and frame rate. We size the storage around the retention period you need, so it is worth telling us up front if you have a specific requirement.
Do you cover my part of Kent?
We work across Kent, including Maidstone, Dartford, Medway, Canterbury, Ashford, Gravesend, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells and Folkestone. If you are elsewhere in the county, ask — you may well still be inside our normal working area.
Do I need to be there for the installation?
Someone with authority to make decisions about the property should normally be available, particularly at the start when camera positions are agreed and at the end when we show you how the system works.
Is a survey free?
Yes. We do not charge for the initial conversation or estimate, and there is no obligation to proceed.
Do I need to tell anyone I have installed CCTV?
For a domestic system that only covers your own property, generally no. If cameras capture areas beyond your boundary, or if you are recording at a business, UK data protection rules apply and there are responsibilities around signage, retention and handling footage requests. We will flag it if your setup falls into that territory, though we cannot give you legal advice.
What happens if the system develops a fault later?
Get in touch and we will look at it. We offer repairs and planned maintenance on systems we have installed and, in most cases, on systems installed by others.
Still have a question?
Tell us about the property and we will give you a straight answer.
